“The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”… (Luke 9:58, 59)
Jesus’ paradoxical responses to both of these situations sparks interesting introspections. To the self-appointed He responded …the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head and the one whom He called made an excuse. Let me deal with the second one first. The second man was so stuck in men’s tradition that the traditional burying ritual of fathers blinded him and he missed God’s calling on his life. While the first man’s wealth and comfort will stand in the way to be effective in God’s program. Jesus saw and knew he was not ready to give up his wealth and comfort. Although he requested to follow Jesus, but his tenacity to follow Jesus all the way will be short lived, since serving God and mammon do not correlate well. His momentary excitement in the miracles he saw Jesus perform would not convince him to give up his wealth and comfort. Jesus knew the hearts of both men. Again, although many men and women found themselves in ministries of some sort, Jesus still knows those in whose hearts He can find a place to lay His head. Will there be a place for Jesus to lay His head in you today? Receive and worship Him in spirit and in truth. Serve Jesus with all of your heart, mind, and soul
